Danny Orleans has been teaching children how to perform magic at libraries, YMCAs, community centers, summer camps, after-school programs and park districts for over 40 years. In this 30-page e-book, he shares his teaching techniques for magicians who want to hold magic workshops for children. He combined what he learned as a magic teacher with his years of performing magic for children to serve as a consultant for Scholastic Publishing. The result was ten magic sets called "The Ultimate Magic Club."
In The Art of Teaching Magic to Children e-book you will learn classroom management strategy, how to use magic to teach SUCCESS, how to set up the classroom, structure class time and more. Also included is the actual 8-week curriculum that Danny has used over and over again to teach children as young as 7 years old. Best of all, you get detailed instructions for 12 tricks, including 9 highly illustrated handouts for you to photocopy. These really help kids when they practice at home. The e-book has over 50 illustrations and photographs which clarify the teaching process.

While there are plenty of books about performing magic for children, I haven’t seen much about teaching magic to children so to find this ebook was exciting. Although 31 pages seemed a bit thin, I happily dropped the $24 to get access to Danny’s insights on his “40 year period” of teaching magic to children. And then the disappointment hit. Part of it is my fault in assuming that the ebook contained 31 pages of instruction in the art of teaching magic, plus the handouts. But I was wrong. Here’s what’s on those 31 pages:- 5 pages of cover, copyright, dedication, bio, table of contents. That’s 16% of the content of the 31 total pages.- 5 pages about teaching magic to children, which is more of a collection of tips than a complete breakdown of teaching magic. And one of those pages is a free download from AmazeKids, so there are four pages of new information total. Are there a few good tips? Yes. The section on providing feedback (1 page) to the kids is very good, but much of the rest is common sense.- 1 page of his example curriculum for an 8-session class. This is a basic table outlining what tricks are taught on each day, far from what most people think of when the word “curriculum” is used. Several of the listed tricks must be purchased separately and some are not even discussed in the ebook. - 9 handouts of simple tricks covering 13 pages. Not sure where he obtained the descriptions of the tricks, as one describes performing for your “customer” as if it was for demos at a magic shop. The handouts are OK, but they are unrelated to the teaching content of the ebook. There is no breakdown as to why each trick is good for the kids, no notes on challenges you might experience when teaching it, little patter… the tricks do appear on the curriculum outline, but no info on how to actually teach them.- 2 Build Guides for a gimmicked card trick and an apparatus over 5 pages. Both of these are good guides and items that kids would get a kick out of. - 1 page certificate of completion (an example from his class. You would have to make your own from scratch.)- 1 page letter to parents. (Again, an example from his class.)I’ve been a fan of AmazeKids for a long time and I have several of their effects and books. I have had a lot of respect for Danny Orleans and purchased his Kids Show Masterplan, but this ebook fails in the stated purpose. Though the product description and video don’t exactly make false statements, there is an implication that you’re going to receive far more than what is delivered. I wanted to learn The Art of Teaching Magic to Children and that’s what I paid for, but there’s no real art here. The 31 pages are 84% handouts or other odds and ends that have nothing to do with teaching. It’s not unusual to buy a magic book and find portions that aren’t usable and that’s just the way it goes. In this case however, I think this is the most disappointing magic book purchase I’ve ever made.
