3 Card Monte

The magician displays three cards. One is red, and the other two are blue. A spectator is asked to try and keep track of the red card after the group is flipped over and mixed. No matter how hard they try, the spectators never can find the red card - because it vanishes from the group as soon as the cards are mixed! In its place is found a blank card! This is a trick that works itself. There is no sleight of hand involved. Can be performed moments after opening the package!

I've recently become slightly obsessed with packet tricks, and with Monte style packet tricks in particular. I'll cut to the chase. This trick, as it stands, is a bit pants. There's no build up, no story, it's just a case of showing the cards, turning them over and telling the spectator to pick the one they saw in the middle. When they do, the pips and indices have vanished. The remaining cards are not inspectable at all - or atleast one of them isn't. I suppose if you have a matching deck, you could switch the gimmicked card to be inspected, but that seems a lot of hassle for what is a very simple, unimpressive trick. The only real way I can see tis trick having any potential, as it stands, is as a way of "encouraging" a child to do their homework, for example. You show them the cards fanned out and say, you see the 5 of hearts? (or whatever your middle card is set to be). If you can pick the 5 of hearts, you don't have to do your homework. Then you hold the fan face down and they inevitably pick the blank card. you could even write on that card "Homework time", etc.One way the trick could be improved is by having some business cards printed the exact size of these cards, and having the back of the business card printed with the playing card back design. Then you have an interesting way of handing out business cards. The only problem with this is, you'd need to get permission before printing your business cards with the playing card design on the back due to copyright laws.Another option that's just occurred to me - and this is certainly the most wholesome option - is if you have a child in the family who wants to be a magician. This is a potential gateway trick into other monte routines. All in all, I feel it's a very substandard trick.
