Producing Balance - A Documentary
By Joshua Jay - Sunday, February 10, 2019
I created "Balance" eight years ago, but bringing it to market was a team effort. Unbeknownst to me, they had the foresight to film the whole process, and I watched it grinning from ear to ear.
I tend to think of the creation of magic as a solitary effort — in my case I do it alone, with a little music in the background, in my boxers (TMI?). But the creation of magic includes the production of magic, and "Balance" had one of the most dizzying paths to completion. There are dozens of moving parts, assembly lines, CAD drawings, and way, way too much Gatorade. Watch the documentary to see what I mean.
The important part of this process, though, for me, was learning that even a manufacturing process can improve the magic. How? Well, I had worked on "Balance" for eight years before I felt it was ready to share with the world. I had considered what I thought was every aspect of the trick. But during the process, we were able to make tiny but measurable improvements to the props themselves. Each of these changes made a moment quicker, a transition more seamless, a switch faster, or the sculpture itself more sturdy. And as you can imagine, all these little things add up. The product you're going to use is better than the prototype I closed my show with for so many years.
