So Soo Me
By Ken Trombly - Friday, July 9, 2021
Yes, the last blog post was a Chung Ling Soo poster, but you have to admit that this one is extra special. Printed by James Upton Litho of Birmingham, England, this half sheet (approximate 20 X 30 inches) depicts a parade that never occurred, in honor of a character who was also pure fantasy – William Ellsworth Robinson having taken on the persona of the "marvelous Chinese conjurer".
Nonetheless, the beautiful colors and imagery of this highly detailed and beautifully executed stone lithograph created the perfect advertisement for a popular London magic show. This particular poster was on a dealers list received in the mail in 1986 from the trailblazing magic dealer, Mario Carrandi. Back in those pre-internet days of collecting, the appearance of a catalog in the mail demanded one's full and immediate attention, the downside being that any chance of work productivity came to a total standstill. It was then a race to the telephone! I hope that you enjoy this beauty.
