My Top Five Masterclass Moments
By Andi Gladwin - Tuesday, June 28, 2022
When we conceived of the idea of Vanishing Inc. Masterclass, Josh and I were particularly proud of a hidden personal benefit: that it would give us two hours a week where we could switch off and immerse ourselves in magic. That tradition has continued, and I have watched every single session and interview. It has been, in many ways, a rewarding experience.
This month marks Vanishing Inc. Masterclass’ second anniversary and I’ve found myself reflecting on the things we’ve all learned, the moments we’ve shared, and the magic tricks that have made it into my repertoire. And while I took something from every single instructor, here are my top five moments from the series so far.
Asi Wind’s Tamed Card
I have probably spent more time practising this trick than any other trick in the Masterclass series … and it was one of the first! Asi launched the series in July 2020 and he performed this trick at the end of the session, and then explained it at the start of the next one. I came up with my own presentation, but the handling remained exactly as Asi taught it. It’s great.
Blake Vogt Losing his Internet
Never work in live production. It’s incredibly stressful! What happens when you’re streaming live from someone’s house and the internet goes down? Well, in this case, we had Danny Garica drive over to Blake’s house and they both sat in his car and gave us a session from the car! Sometimes gold can come from technical hitches and this was certainly a moment I’ll remember.
Carisa Hendrix’s Data Mining
I watched Carisa’s Masterclass in awe. Over two Masterclasses, she masterfully spoke straight to camera for three hours without notes or prompts and what shone through was her passion for magic and just how serious she takes it as both an art form and as a craft. Of particular interest was her segment on how she records her shows and extracts data from each one. As a data nerd, this was the first time I had even considered how much actionable data is hidden inside a magic show and how it can be pulled out.
Chris Kenner’s Stories
Chris’ Masterclasses were packed full of material. His four-card trick was of particular interest to me. But his stories remain in my mind as they were a fascinating insight into the life of one of the busiest behind-the-scenes people in magic.
Marc Paul’s Q&A Routine
When Marc Paul told me that his second Masterclass was going to be on a single routine, I was somewhat apprehensive. I even asked him if he knew that the Masterclass needed to be an hour and a half long! I need not have worried; his conversation on this masterpiece of a routine was fascinating, educational, and inspiring. If I ever do a Q&A routine, it will be this one. It might just be the best value of the entire Masterclass series.
The thing I’m most proud of from the Masterclass series is that we’ve selected speakers that you don’t normally see do magic downloads or live lectures, and they’ve talked about things that they don’t normally talk about. Year three will be no exception. We’ll see talks from magic celebrities, magic legends, and even some magic experts that you might not know of who will speak on subjects you’ll love to hear about. It’s going to be yet another exciting year!
In July we have card legend Allan Ackerman, followed by Jim Steinmeyer in August!
