Silhouette Silhouette Silhouette Silhouette Silhouette Silhouette

This is going to be the magic trick everyone is talking about this year - and for years to come. It’s not like anything else you’ve ever seen. Insanely visual, wholly unique and most importantly, truly magical.

What is it?

Silhouette by Tobias Dostal allows you to create a magical moment your spectators will never forget. Using a borrowed phone’s flashlight, you cast a shadow on the wall. Then, you can interact and manipulate that shadow. Yes, really. You read that right. Silhouette gives you the ability to play with shadows. You’ll be able to make them take things from your hand, to tickle you, to make shadows from things that are not there. It’s inexplicable. It’s amazing. It’s like nothing else you or your audiences have ever seen before.

What you get:

  • Twelve bespoke “shadows” you can operate and control
  • Tobias Dostal’s hour long, detailed video instructions
  • Twelve different routines to get you started - then you can let your imagination run riot

Things to remember:

  • You can any phone as a light source - and yes, it can be borrowed
  • The phone is not rigged
  • Instant reset
  • The method is as cool as the effect

Silhouette is a rare magic prop. It can be used by any type of magician, in almost any situation. Close up, parlour, stage, mentalism. A children’s entertainer could enthral an audience with this.

It’s a cliche, but you really are getting something that plays big but packs flat and you really are only limited by your imagination.

Cyril, Daniel Garcia, Angelo Carbone, Richard Sanders, Chris Korn and many many more are already raving about this saying things like:

“One of the most creative things I've seen in a long, long time.” “I absolutely love it. It's REALLY great” “That was the craziest thing I've seen” “This is one of the best close-up illusions that I have ever seen.”

It’s already setting the magic world on fire, and for good reason. Order you Silhouette today.

The product it great. It does take some practice and it is hand coordination intensive but the effect is awesome. It's a bit too costly but for me it was money well spent.

There rarely comes a magic effect that's truly unique and different from everything else on the market. This is so creative and SO good. I will perform this with every chance I get. A fun idea to play with is to incorporate this with PK touches--and if you want to seriously freak your spectators out, combine it with EVP by Alan Rorrison.

It really doesn't get better than this. This is a trick that most laymen will only see once in their lives. I was fortunate to get it early from Vanishing Inc, and my god is this trick fantastic. Now, this is definitely not something I would do straight out of the box. It wouldn't do it justice. It's graduation party season as of its release, and I was blessed to perform it in front of an audience. This stuff kills. Buy it. This product is high quality. You will not be disappointed.

I'm reviewing something that is "in transit," but I just received the tutorial link. Holy Cow, I hate to flagrantly rip off "Jurassic Park's" John Hammond with a "spared no expense" line, but serious thought has been put into what is really--a very old principle.

I bought this, knowing I will use it for most likely one addendum to an already established routine. that alone pays for it. I hope Tobias is richly rewarded for his trouble, because he deserves it.

I rarely write reviews, but for this product I couldn't help myself. Silhouette just arrived today and all I can say Holy **** is this thing amazing! It is rare these days to find something this original and this well made. I feel that every penny spent on this thing was a true investment. I have no doubt that I will be performing this every chance I get, and did I already say that this thing is amazing? Just get it, if you are disappointed then it is likely that you are the type of person that is disappointed even if you just won the powerball!

This trick is great. It works well, you can use any phone. However, it is not 100% suitable for people like me who are left handed. So I have to practice a lot of things with my right hand which is hard. Also, if you have smaller hands this trick is a lot harder. But other than that it is very well made and the tutorial is done with perfection.

It's good. . . it's very, very good. HOWEVER, if the cell phone you use has more than one LED as a flashlight, the shadows become very blurry. the instructions deal with this issue very briefly but to get the best effect you'll need to use an older phone with a single bulb flash.

You need a particular phone to get this to work. Depending on then phone used you need long hands. Popsockets kickstand phone cases effect this trick. I would not recommend.

Community questions about Silhouette

Have a question about this product? It's possible others do too. Ask here and other Vanishing Inc. Magic customers will be able to respond with assistance! Alternatively, email us and we can help too.

  • Justin asks: Can the productions be done with the left hand and the light be held in the right hand?

    • 1. Andrew answers: Maybe? . . . but it would be VERY awkward and unnatural if you do.
    • 2. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Yes.
    • 1. Andrew answers: Maybe? . . . but it would be VERY awkward and unnatural if you do.
    • 3. Brian answers: If the 'protrusion' stopper thingy could be bent 180 degrees...to the other side, then the unit could then just be assembled in reverse direction and work for left-handed performances. Lefties, are so neglected. ;)
    • 4. Brenden answers: While some things can be done in the left hand. In my personal opinion the best trick can't be done in your left hand.
  • Marc asks: Hi Does it come with a routine that’s structured

    • 1. Sandra answers: It says in the ad copy that it comes with 12 different routines.
    • 2. Kenneth answers: I believe that each performer should design their own routine that best fits their individual personality and talents. So, in this regard, there are 12 included 'mini-routines' and some other suggestions that should easily allow you to design an individual full routine in which the scripting and choreography can be personalized to your unique style and personality.

  • Marc asks: Thanks Sandra What I mean is a real routine not like the video clip of pulling a rose out of a shadow that’s not a routine

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: I would describe pulling a rose out of a shadow as a routine. It may be a short routine, but it is a routine in my personal opinion.
  • Tri Marten asks: What about the angle?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: You are in control of the lighting, so you can control the angles by adjusting the light and its distance to the wall.
  • Stephen asks: I'm a local Santa, and I work in heavy sleeves with fur on the cuff, in white cotton gloves. Can these 12 gimmicks be adapted for my real silhouette?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: That would be a bit of DIY arts and crafts for you, but it certainly possible.
  • Frank asks: Can you do this against a blank wall, or is the "blank screen" behind the magician (as seen in the video) part of the props?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: A blank wall will work well.
    • 2. Kenneth answers: He even mentions in the instructional video that this can be performed against the floor. I hope that helps.
  • Peter asks: Besides the 12 options provided can u create additional or will there be additional ones later on?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: You could certainly create your own, but that will take some DIY effort.
    • 2. Ananth answers: Hmm it's not possible unless your are very very good at making gimmicks
    • 3. Peter answers: I guess I’ll have to wait to get this to understand the diy for this effect method! :)
  • Peter asks: Can u do this with any light source other than a phone?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: If it is bright enough and of a similar size.
    • 2. Andrew answers: No.
  • YuHsun asks: As far as your concern, tell us about the restrictions of this trick please, thank you!!!

    • 1. Ehrin answers: Why didn’t they answer your questions??
    • 2. Kenneth answers: Well, if by restrictions you mean, conditions, then I would say... It is best to perform this against a lighter surface for more contrast and with less ambient light. But even in lit areas, if the light source is close enough to the surface then this could still be performed. Any angle issues are easily taken care of and the instructional video does an excellent job in covering any issues that you may have. I hope this helps!

  • Jonas asks: Can you also set the phone on the table and use your both hands to “grab” things?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: You need to hold the phone as part of the method.
  • Ehrin asks: What The scripting. Can This be done on brick walls , what color of walls, how reliable is it? Any DIY

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: It can be done on any wall, so long as the shadow looks clear.
  • Peter asks: Can you list the 12 routines that are provided?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Many of them can't really be described in text, but I'll try! There's the rose one on the trailer, one where your hand goes in slow motion, a funny ghost one, one with a microphone, a banana, a knife, a card routine, and more. It's lots of fun to play with.
  • Ron asks: I saw this described as a close up routine. Is there any reason why this could not be done on stage in the right conditions?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: I cannot think of any reason why it couldn't be done on stage. You would certainly need to consider the staging to make sure that everyone can see it though.
    • 2. Kenneth answers: Teller does a similar routine with the rose and shadow on stage, I saw it in person and it was amazing. So with Silhouette this effect could be equally amazing with the right performer I think.
  • Peter asks: Do you get any extra props? for instance the rose? How good must be your slight of hands capabilities for the trick showed in the trailer?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: You do not get the rose, but you do get the gimmicks to make the effect possible. You'll need to practice it, but it's not difficult.
    • 2. Ananth answers: It's all about choreography. And a little bit of practice
  • Paul asks: Do you have to make a choice which of the 12 routines you want to perform or is it possible to combine more than one ... thus is what makes the demo so entertaining instead of all over in a flash?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: You receive all twelve effects. You can certainly routine them together, but it would take a little consideration and prop management.
  • Scott asks: My only question and concern is if the gimmick is relatively hidden/small or easy to find if they look in that direction.

    • 1. Ananth answers: It's some thing in the size of your pinky finger
    • 2. Kenneth answers: The way that it is used as described in the instructional video makes it very easy to 'hide' from the audience. Also, since they are observing the performance on the surface, misdirection is already built in to the effect.

  • Scott asks: Thanks. And easy to secretly ditch??

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: The secret "thing" can be easily ditched as you put your phone away.
  • Alexander asks: Can a candle, flashlight, etc be used as a light source or can it only be from a phone?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: The phone does help cover some of the moves, but you might be able to find a way to add cover with other lightsources.
  • Peter asks: Is the gimmick rechargeable , if so for how long or battery operated?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: There are no batteries.
  • Dave asks: Can the effects be performed on a horizontal surface like a tabletop and how wont that affect the angles?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: I don't think you would get a big enough shadow for that.
  • Nicholas asks: Is the gimmick(s) durable? Will it/they last?

    • 1. Treven answers: Honestly probably the best made, most durable gimmicks I’ve ever bought. For the price I don’t think you could get a better quality gimmick. Will last forever as long as your not careless! I was very pleased when I opened it, I never thought I’d ever get something this nice of quality, made me love it even before trying the trick out.
    • 2. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Very durable!

  • Royce asks: Can a beginner do this?

    • 1. Kenneth answers: I have to somewhat disagree with that answer, sorry. I think what they mean to say is that the operation of the device itself requires only practice, but some of the included 'routines' such as the card grab or rose grab or sunglasses do require some degree of sleight of hand. However, the techniques used should be fairly easy for a beginner to quickly grasp with practice and perseverance. But other routines can be performed with little or no sleight of hand.
    • 2. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Of course. It will take some practice, but there's nothing stopping you there. This trick doesn't have any traditional magic sleights or methods.

  • Geoff asks: what is the reset time to change between sillouette gimmicks? How many different ones could you demonstrate in a single performance?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: The reset is pretty quick. Out of sight, you could change from one to another in ten seconds or so. You get 12 gimmicks, but I would not personally use more than one in a single performance.
  • Alexander asks: Without going into detail, does Silhouette require the help of an assistant?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: It does not.
  • LAU asks: Does it matter about the size of your fingers? I have relatively small hands.

    • 1. Ceri answers: I have HUGE hands and the gimmick does not "fit" comfortably on my finger. I had to widen it. I could not get to grips with it and thus never performed it. :-(
    • 2. SGKYDUYEN answers: I have small hands too and it's a bit hard for me to do this effect but it's okay. I use an iPhone 5 and it's okay now

  • Mauro asks: Does it work properly with IPhoneX flashlight ?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Sure.
  • Brian asks: I'm left-handed, so my card productions (and such) are much more proficient on the opposite side. Is there a 'advised' way to modify this for those that are left-handed?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: The gimmicks can easily work left handed, but the problem you may run into is the position of the light on the spectators phone, this would vary from phone to phone - or you could use your own phone that you have practiced with.
  • Midhun asks: As shown in video, can we hold the shadow any persons hand? bcos the hands of different persons looks different.

    • John asks: Is it a download of any source. My phone is a phone, and i don't net on my phone?

      • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Yes, you receive a download code.
    • Perry asks: Key Question: does this require an iPhone, or can an Android phone produce the same effects at the quality shown in the trailer? Thanks

      • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: It just requires a phone with a flashlight. There is no app involved.
    • Trevor asks: Does the light have to come from a phone or can you use a standard flashlight or similar?

      • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: The main method requires a phone but with some work you might be able to use other devices
