This is a very durable gimmick. When used the right way, you can create miracles with this shell. I've never done a ton of coin magic. But when I picked this up my mind was racing with ideas that I had never thought to explore.

So when I was starting in magic, Johnson Products set the standard for over-the-counter coin gimmicks (I don't even know if artisan craftsman were doing their thing back then; the internet certainly wasn't around). Tango was not on the map. So I was a little hesitant to order products from Tango because, well, it wasn't Johnson Products. However, don't be scared. My half dollar shell is awsome; perfect; and I frankly couldn't ask for it to be better. If you are thinking about pulling the trigger, do so.

Looks awesome and doesn't feel cheap in your hands. Make sure to use older/broken in coins with rounder edges though. It might cause cause to stick. Had a scare at first but then I looked for and found the right selection to make it happen. No problems with it sticking now at all.

The Kennedy half dollar expanded shell is a great tool for magic. Its not the most precise fit (has a small amount of sound when moving around). However this is a great and not to mention cheap option for your coin shell routines.

The Tango Expanded Shell - Half Dollar is about as good as one can expect for the price. Other Tango coin products I've purchased over the years have held up quite well. As with all "shells", they are fragile; handle with care.

So, while not being top quality, this works with the routine I'm building, and I'm overall pleased with this purchase.

Again VI's customer service is great; prompt shipping and product received in unblemished condition.

I sheepishly claim sub-expert knowledge of coin magic, but I have to say that I find the Tango Expanded Half-Dollar shell more difficult to work with than previous shells I have owned as the rim is only about half the thickness of a coin. When the shell is on a close-up mat, it is too thin for me to pick it up into a palm between the forefinger and pinky. I also find that because of lack of depth of the rim, the shell becomes too easily dislodged from the coin it is hiding. As I say, I am not a "coin guy" -- perhaps there are advantages that i don't see to this design. I'm posting in the spirit of caveat emptor.

  • Aaron asks: Will this Expanded shell work/fit inside an okito box ? Thanks for your response, Aaron

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: I don’t think any expanded shell would fit inside an Okito Box. But it would depend on the specific box.
  • Greg asks: Is this a Kennedy heads?

    • 1. Jim answers: I think they are randomly heads or tails.

  • Rick asks: Is this for the Kennedy half’s? As I use the 1964 silver Kennedy half’s.

    • 1. Rick answers: cool i have both silver and later. I will be purchasing!
    • 2. Benjamin answers: These are made from regular Kennedy half dollars (not silver ones).

  • John asks: I find this shell has a slightly darker tint than my regular half dollars which is obvious when placed together on a pad. Is there a different half dollar shell available to match the lighter coins ?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: It's always easier to find coins to match the shell rather than the other way round. I'd recommend taking the shell to a coin store, asking to go through their halves, and find some that match more to your liking.
  • John asks: I have a collection of half dollars without the gold tint. After some research I found that some half dollars are made with a gold tint. I purchased this shell not knowing it had a gold tint . Do you also sell the half dollar shell without the gold tint?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: They are sadly not differentiated like that by Tango. It might be worth going to a coin store and finding coins to match the shell?
