"Absolutely the best book test I have seen. This book really is totally examinable and offers several great effects not seen with other book tests. This is a must for all mentalists to put into their arsenal. It completely fooled me."Sal Picante

An ingenious book test capable of withstanding the most intense scrutiny from your audience. It can be read from front to back, there’s nothing to find.

Developed by Andy Choy, with support from Dan Harlan and SarahElla Phant, “Aesop’s Favorite” is unlike any other book test you’ve ever seen. The deviously clever method allows you to perform an incredible mind-reading miracle without relying on gimmicked pages or altered text that can be accidentally discovered by an overeager audience member.

There is nothing abnormal about the book and the outcome is different each time. Your helper can freely handle or read the book because there is truly nothing suspicious to be found.

“Aesop’s Favorite” is a custom-made, pocket-sized version of Aesop's Fables containing 170 different stories. Your participant opens up to one at random (no forces) and silently reads it to themselves. Without fishing for anything, you immediately start revealing details about their freely chosen story. You can then repeat this by having them flip through the book to find an illustration they like (again, no forces here), which you are able to accurately describe (or even draw).

  • No forces
  • No anagrams
  • No dual reality
  • No electronics
  • No fishing
  • No assistants
  • No sleight of hand
  • No gimmicks

We know it sounds too good to be true, but it really is this direct. You can see for yourself in the full performance featured in the trailer, as well as the additional performances below.

Even better, the way the routine is structured offers ample opportunity to build up the drama and add your own unique personality to the revelation. There are even some other sneaky built-in features explained in the comprehensive instructions.

Despite the intricacy of the method, it's actually quite simple to understand. Like any good effect, it will take some practice to get fully comfortable and ensure a smooth performance. But the method is not technical in nature and is well within the range of any magician or mentalist. An easy starter method helps you get up and running quickly as you work on the more advanced version.

“Aesop’s Favorite” is not only perfect for the professional magician or mentalist, but also makes a great companion for passionate amateurs that often have to perform for the most difficult and discerning audiences of all—friends and family.

You’ll receive the book, a PDF quickstart guide that highlights the main method and the other built-in features, as well as a bonus video in which Dan Harlan covers everything you need to get the most mileage out of this remarkable routine.

I was very satisfied with this small book. The secret is very clever and it allows for multiple revelations and repeat performances. The inner working will take some time and mnemonics to get down pat but should be attainable with reasonable effort. This is an excellent addition to a bookcase for an impromptu casual demonstration. For more formal presentation, it’s safe to say there are better options.

Great memory technique that I used to memorize the Mnemonica card stack that is likely more of a challenge than this book test

While the physical product has yet to arrive, I watched (most of) the tutorial and downloaded the PDF instructions and am properly impressed. As a storyteller and magician, I was hopeful that I could add this to my traveling bag of tricks. Turns out my hopes were well-founded.

Yes, there is memory work, but it is not that bad. This from someone who has never tried to memorize a stack and has a difficult time remembering where he left his working deck. After three days I have comfortably committed fifteen of the twenty-five total pegs to memory and will add the others over the next two days. After that there is additional memorization required to perform additional reveals, but it, too, seems accessible.

The PDF contains everything you need to get started. The tutorial is probably fine, but I am not a fan of video tutorials as they usually seem to drone on for far too long and I grow quickly bored. (My MO is to watch the minimum required to grok the mechanics and move along.) The PDF is portable and a wonderful aid in committing the pegs to memory. There's also a narrative included to help with the process.

I am giving myself a month to properly practice and rehearse. Perhaps others may be able to move faster, but I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to performing.

If the physical product is of similar or better quality as the learning materials, this is going to become one of my favorite performance pieces.

Recommended for storytellers!

  • Chris asks: Hi - the description states, "Your participant opens up to one at random (no forces) and silently reads it to themselves," but the video demo shows otherwise, where the performer is holding the book and telling the spectator to stop. Which method is used or can both be used?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: There are a variety of methods to choose from.
  • Alexander asks: The description says lots of no this or that, but does it require strong memory?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: There are a variety of methods, and you do not NEED a strong memory, but there are options if you are familiar with The Memory Arts.
  • Alton asks: Following on the response to Chris’s question, does one of the performance options allow for the spectator to hold the book and select which page to read from? A yes or no would be most helpful to my purchase decision. Thanks

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Yes, Hope this Helps!
