First, you bring out a small perfume bottle and let them smell it before you spray it on their hands. They can clearly see the liquid on their hands and can still smell the scent.

Then, on your command, the scent disappears. They cannot smell it until you make it reappear.

For the next phase, you snap your fingers and now everybody loses their ability to smell it. Despite how strong the scent was, nobody is able to smell it anymore.
