Ahead of his Magifest 2022 appearance, Stuart MacDonald shares a little more about himself and what he plans to discuss during his lecture. Highlights include how he develops new material and improves old routines—particularly the trick featured in his Fool Us appearance.

With that, we hand it over to Stuart...

What Is your favorite convention memory?
Hands down, seeing Lance Burton perform at Abbotts in the early 80’s

What legacy do you hope to leave on the magic world? My Unintentional Magician (Haunted Mirror Act)—which you may have seen on Penn and Teller Fool Us.

What excites you most about the future of magic?
I’ve been particularly excited by the magic coming out of Korea. Korean magicians toppled the arena and started building a new era of magic on the level of sorcery.

What’s one mistake in your career you encourage others not to repeat?
Do not stay in a safe bubble. Markets that are hot soon run dry. Always be on the lookout for new challenging markets.

What do you consider to be “real magic”?
When you can make someone smile by simply doing the French Drop in a casual moment.

What is the wildest event you’ve ever performed at?
A distributors convention for a large, very well-known brand. They were drinking for 6 hours before we got to our illusion show performance. My manager was there and told Lori, my partner, to end the show before they riot.

What’s your favorite fun fact?
Necessity is the mother of invention.

If you had Josh and Andi over for dinner, what would you cook?
Pizza!

Before we go, any final bits of wisdom or fun facts to share?

  • I use quality engineering to create my show
  • Bits of business are way more important than the magic you perform
  • I pride myself in finding appropriate music and really enjoy the creativity of mashing several different scores to make a unique music piece for a routine.
